Lawsuit Claims Toxic Dams on the Klamath River Cost Millions

A $1 billion lawsuit filed in early December claims that PacifiCorp hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River produce hazardous waste in the form of toxic algae that harms salmon as well as people. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco by Klamath Riverkeeper, elders of the Yurok and Karuk tribes, and the owner of rental cabins along the river. The suit claims the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission failed to follow the recommendations of the US Fish and wildlife Service when it issued a final environmental impact study on re-licensing the Klamath Dams.
The FEIS compares the agency mandates for ladders to dam removal and finds dam removal to save ratepayers $7 million a year for the next 30 years. This is consistent with a recent California Energy Commission study that also found that dam removal would save ratepayers millions.
